The first weekend of March is reserved for the second edition of the unique sports event "Galeb Sail & Ski Race", which will be held from March 1 to 3 in Platka and in Kostrena, and combines an unusual combination of sailing and skiing, and thus in the true sense of the word brings together the coastal and the Goran region of our county.
On Friday, March 1, the competition will open with an afternoon event on Platka, and if due to the lack of snow it is not possible to organize the planned format of the evening giant slalom race, the competitors will try another sport, while on Saturday and Sunday the 2nd and 3rd March on the sea in front of Kostrena to sail a regatta in the Sljuka, 420 and Flying Dutchman classes. Points will be awarded for both competitions, it was announced at a press conference at the PGŽ headquarters, which was attended by the head of the Administrative Department for Culture, Sports and Technical Culture. Sonja Sisic and members of the organizing committee headed by the president Dean Pavlak and presidents of Rijeka Ski Club and Galeb Sailing Club.
As the leader Šišić stated in the introduction, this manifestation connects the sea and the mountains in the most beautiful way and points to the exceptional tourism and sports potential of our blue-green county. In order to attract as many competitors as possible instead of one, this year there will be sailing in three classes, so the name of the event has been adapted to that, so it is no longer Snip&Ski but Sail &Ski, said the president of the Galeb Sailing Club. Milko Volarić. Considering the above-average warm winter, it is difficult to predict whether the planned program will be able to take place on Platka, but according to the president of the Rijeka Ski Club Davor Štimac, if the ski race takes place, it will be according to the rules of the FIS, and it will be run on the Radeševo 1 track. The Goran sports center will take care of all technical aspects on Platko, the GSC director confirmed. Alen Udovič.
The event is jointly organized by the Galeb Sailing Club, the Rijeka Ski Club and the Goran Sports Center under the auspices of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Croatian Olympic Committee, the Croatian Tourist Board, the Croatian Ski Association, the Croatian Sailing Association, the Municipality of Kostrena, the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Kostrena, Municipality of Čavle and TZO Čavle. Sponsors Jadrolinija and Medico Special Hospital also provided support for the event.
With the sports event "Galeb Sail & Ski Race", the organizers are trying to revitalize an important part of the sports history of our region, i.e. the former "Adriatic Slalom", a popular skiing and sailing competition from 1981 in which greats from both sports worlds performed, noting that it is rare which region can boast of the geographical peculiarity that skiing and sailing competitions can be held simultaneously at such a short distance.
