Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is the European Region of Sport for 2026

Primorje-Gorski Kotar County solemnly took over the prestigious title in December European regions of sport for 2026, one of the most prestigious European awards in the field of sports, awarded by the organization ACES EuropeThis officially confirmed the decision from March, which recognized the PGC as a region that systematically invests in the development of sports, sports infrastructure and the promotion of an active lifestyle among all generations.

The award ceremony was attended by the Deputy County Prefect on behalf of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Toni Štimac, Head of the Administrative Department for Culture, Sports and Technical Culture Sonja Sisic as well as representatives of county sports institutions. Among numerous European cities and regions, PGŽ found itself among the laureates thanks to a clearly defined sports strategy, a strong candidacy, and a field evaluation conducted by ACES Europe at the beginning of the year.

Deputy Prefect Toni Štimac pointed out that the title is a confirmation of long-term continuity of investment in sports and its importance in the overall development of the county. "This is a great recognition for Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the entire sports sector. It is proof that we are moving in the right direction. In this mandate, which is evident from the adopted budget, we will additionally emphasize investments in sports - both amateur and professional. Sport contributes to the health of citizens, but also strengthens the tourist offer of the county. This recognition will be a strong incentive for even better support for sports", said Stimac.

Head of the county, Sonja Šišić, who led the preparation and implementation of the candidacy process, emphasized that the title has a special meaning for the entire county.We have been working intensively on our candidacy for a whole year and, at the same time, preparing the activities that we will carry out during 2026. Our goal is to promote sports, include all generations and encourage as many citizens as possible to regularly engage in sports. We want sports to become an integral part of our citizens' everyday lives.", emphasized Šišić.

The ACES Europe organization has recognized Primorje-Gorski Kotar County as an environment in which sports infrastructure, clubs and associations, programs for children and youth, recreational athletes and people with disabilities, as well as a culture of healthy and active living, are systematically developed. Obtaining this title brings strong international recognition, confirmation of the quality of the county's sports policy, and opens up new opportunities for international cooperation and project development.

A large number of sporting events, educational programs and recreational activities are planned for the PGŽ region in 2026, with an emphasis on making sports accessible to everyone – from children to seniors. The county thus aims to further position itself as a region that bases its development on quality of life, health and active outdoor activities.
